Real Estate Taxes are out of control and Melinda intends to do something about it.
Our incomes aren't keeping up with our real estate tax increases and assessed values continue to rise while property values fall. Assessments are lagging being real property values.
Melinda is the only candidate for Lake County Board with a comprehensive plan.
She'll call for an immediate audit and reform of the assessment system throughout the county. Something that was recommended a year ago, and never done. The process is flawed and inconsistent from one township to the next.
The current system allows for unlimited percentage increases in a calendar year.
In some cases residents have seen their taxes double in one year. Melinda thinks this is wrong. She'll call for a cap on increases in assessed values.
Melinda will work to shift School Funding away from property taxes.
Illinois is one of the worst states in the nation when it comes to school funding. It's not something the County Board controls but this must change if we believe that quality education is a right for all of our children. Real Estate taxes are not the best way to fund education. Everyone seems to agree but nothing has gotten done. "I promise to be vocal and push our State Legislators to deal with the issue."
Melinda will hold the line on Levy Increases in Lake County.
Some Taxing bodies ask the wrong question when it comes to Levies. They ask how much do we think we can get without increasing our tax rate? They guess how much assessed values have gone up and ask for that amount of money in the coming year. Melinda will look at the budget and ask what we need to operate and ask for that. That's what you do at home and that's what she'll do on the County Board.
